Description
~ Ammolite cab ~

Offered here is a dazzling doublet cabochon of gem ammolite, from Canada, the first ammolite cut by my young son Christopher. He really surprised me with how well he fashioned this none-too-easy to work material into a brilliant gem. Ammolite is an ancient shell material that's many millions of years old, and though fossil ammonites are found on every continent, I'm told that those with the brilliant rainbow colors are found only in Canada. And gem ammolite is even rarer than diamonds, by far. This example is certainly colorful, though it does have areas of matrix showing that are a dark brownish black color. The stone's fire is predominantly red, orange, and gold, with some brilliant greens. The face of this cab is capped with natural optical quartz, permanently bonded in place to protect this treasure from harm, making it practical for every day wear. It has a well rounded dome of nearly mm, a sweet designer shape, and a fine glassy polish. Imaged in natural sunlight.

Size: 46x28 mm
Weight: approximately 74 carats
