Description
~ Blue opal cab ~

Here is a cabochon of blue opal, a fairly recent find from Oregon's Succor Creek formation, at the edge of the Owyhee breaks. And lemme tell ya folks, it's mighty appealing stuff! Even though there's no fire, I hesitate to call it 'common opal', because it's certainly anything BUT common. It has a super-saturated blue hue that's to-die-for gemmy, with some very subtle lighter clouds and dots at its larger end. I was surprised to see that this strongly colored stone is so very translucent, even when indirectly backlit. And it's amazing to see how light passing through the stone transforms it from blue to a yellowish hue. It should be equally beautiful in gold or silver jewelry, no doubt, or it would make a fine addition to any collection. The stone has a low but rounded dome of 4.5mm, with the small end being a bit thinner, a fun designer shape, and a totally glassy polish both front and back.

Size: 44x23mm
Weight: approximately 27 carats
