Nipomo marcasite cab ~
Here is a HUGE deluxe cabochon of rare Nipomo marcasite in agate, from that famous location in Central California. The area where this legendary material was once collected is no longer accessible, so it has become mighty tough to come by these days, particularly in this far above-average calibre. This one's a splendid example, featuring shiny metallic 'chromed islands' of bright marcasite suspended in a background of pale bluish agate. The marcasite is in the form of plume-like flowery blooms, which are the most unusual and desireable variety, showing oodles of gleam! Scattered throughout the stone, the metallics beneath the surface glitter like you wouldn't believe. You'll look a long, long time to find one this extraordinary! Nipomo marcasite is an extremely challenging material to photograph, because it's as brilliantly reflective as a mirror (see photo 4); the stone in hand is much MUCH nicer than my camera and I were able to illustrate. This substantial cab has a high rounded dome of 6mm, and a pleasant heft in the hand that will probably surprise you. Its smoothly powerful 'pillow' shape is perfect for showing off this stone's exceptional figure, and it has a slick, shiny polish both front and back.
