Obsidian cab ~
Offered here is a cabochon of gold sheen obsidian from northern California, cut by my son Chris. At first glance, it may appear to be plain ol' mahogany, but shows plenty of gleam when held in the light at a certain angle. I appreciate the subtle banding in this material, composed of many flow layers. Some are clear, some golden, some dark, and cutting through those in shaping the cab reveals bands that almost resemble woodgrain, with a neat visual effect of depth. The stone has a well rounded dome of 6mm, and a brilliant polish both front and back.
